What Faster Broadband Has Done For Me
Living in Rutland we were one of the first counties to get fibre to the cabinet. So working from home was great until I needed to connect to the office. Despite all my campaigning, Fengate in Peterborough was one of the last cabinets to go live with fibre.
We now have fibre to the cabinet – the difference is fantastic! I can connect to the office without losing speed. The engineers can be downloading software and updates from Microsoft and I can still work on line without being affected.
Best of all we now have a VOIP phone system – all running on the same fibre broadband line! So what – you may say! Well I no longer need to come into the office! Gone is my 45 minute trudge up and down the A1. I now have a phone extension at home that allows me to make & pick up any phone calls coming into the office as if I was sat at my desk. The line quality is as good as ISDN.
What about the savings:
I intend now just to come into Peterborough one day per week – so our savings are as follows:
My travel time is 1.5 hours on a good day X 4 = 6 hours (nearly an extra day per week). So 6 hours X 46 weeks (taking into account holidays) = 276 hours which relates to 39.5 days. Nearly 8 weeks of my life back per year!
Financial savings:
Savings over 1 year £1113.60
Savings over 5 years £5568.00
Savings over 7 years when lease expires £8875.20
YOU Systems offer analogue, ISDN, Fibre, phone & broadband lines. We can also maintain or upgrade your present phone system.

The End of Microsoft Small Business Server
Microsoft is axing its Small Business Server (SBS) products claiming that its replacement, MS Windows Server 2012, “offers lower upfront acquisition and deployment costs”.
Microsoft has been accused of forcing partners and end users towards the Cloud. End users will then either have to subscribe to Office 365 or a hosted Exchange Server.
Microsoft Essentials is designed to serve customers up to 25 users and 50 devices. After that you will have to scale up to the cost of Windows Server 2012 standard and additional Exchange Costs.
In my opinion this is just another way to secure recurring revenues direct to Microsoft!
So, if you are a small business and do not want to be forced to use the Cloud and subscribe to Microsoft’s recurring revenues, you had better get your skates on and purchase MS SBS 2011 or 2012 this year.
MS SBS 2003 is already not supported
MS SBS 2008 is end of life 2013
MS SBS 2011 is end of life 2015
Just drop me an email and I will do comparative costing on both products for you. june@yousystems.co.uk

The security of the Windows 8 operating system
Microsoft has used the computer hardware to increase and speed up security in Windows 8. Computer components can now be used to ensure that malware is not loaded as the Windows 8 operating loads. A self-encrypting hard drive makes your data illegible to the undesirable.
The new capabilities are designed to limit the possibility that malware can be loaded before the operating system. This kind of malware, known as a rootkit, can often bypass or even disable your antivirus and hide its own presence.
Windows 8 also provides a way for the anti-virus software to load first when the PC is powered on, in a further effort to stop malware from overriding your protection.
When it comes to authenticating users, Microsoft has added some functionality obviously designed for those touchscreen devices it is anticipating.
Picture or pin logins can be used once a user’s password has been set, as a short-cut to logging in. While this feature may be convenient, research during testing has shown some serious weaknesses that could allow an attacker to uncover the actual password of accounts using this feature, so discretion is advised!
If you are looking to get a Windows 8 appliance please contact the team at YOU Systems on 01733 563900 or use the contact page.

Windows Server 2008
Now that MS Windows Server 2012 is available, you are unlikely to hear much excitement for Windows Server 2008 but it will be around for some time. In fact, Microsoft has extended its mainstream support of the server OS which was previously set to expire on July 9th 2013 to January 15th 2015.
The company will continue to deliver free security fixes for the operating system beyond this cut-off date, however maintenance updates will require the purchase of extended support from Microsoft. According to the company’s revised product life cycle, paid updates for Windows Server 2008 will now be available through to January 14th, 2020. The new dates were largely determined by Microsoft guidelines, which guarantee a minimum five years of support, or in this case, two years of mainstream support beyond the release of the successor product.
If you require ongoing support on MS Server 2008 or wish to consider upgrading to MS Server 2012 please contact a team member at YOU Systems on 01733 563900.

Has Cloud passed its peak?
According to Steve Brazier, chief executive of analyst Canalys, the cloud buzz is beginning to subside amid growing recognition that it may be the right move only for the options that target consumers, are new or manage traffic.
‘But it makes no sense to take IT that already works and move it into the cloud, just for the sake of it’, Brazier said.
The cloud has been sold as being greener. However, an on-site server room, run on energy efficient best practices, may be a greener alternative. “There are currently 500 suppliers on G-Cloud. If you are storing data on a public cloud provider whose servers are not that efficient, are not well used and use electricity from higher carbon emitting sources there could be scenarios where running your own servers is greener” said David Symons, Director of WSP Environment & Energy.
If you are looking at Cloud being a way of storing your data off site safely then why not look at the option of using Double Take. Please contact our sales team to discuss your options. You can contact YOU Systems on 01733 563900.
